How to plan gifts without duplicates
Collect ideas in one place
Start with the recipient’s suggestions and add useful details such as sizes, preferred editions and links. Ask whether an idea is already owned before anyone buys it.
Make responsibility visible
For each idea, show whether it is still available or someone has volunteered to buy it. A single named buyer makes overlaps easier to spot.
Update the plan promptly
When someone changes their mind or an item is unavailable, update the plan and tell the group before choosing a replacement. Keep alternatives next to the original idea.
Protect the surprise
Agree who should see the buying discussion and avoid forwarding the planning link to the recipient if the group wants the gift to remain a surprise.
A quick checklist
- Ask what the recipient already owns.
- Record useful details and possible alternatives.
- Mark each idea when someone takes responsibility.
- Tell the group before replacing an unavailable item.
